12-1-2020,7:00-9:30pm, Eastern Standard Time, Tuesday, Bowl Bigger Than the Tree With Natural Edge

Live with Lyle

I will turn a bowl bigger than the tree with a natural edge.  Topics will include chucking methods, vibration issues, bowl gouge techniques, design considerations, turning with voids, preventing catches, eliminating torn-out grain, and reverse chucking.

Turning is not hard work anymore, you don’t have to beat your body up to do hollowing.  It is a finesse thing no strength is needed.  I let the lathe and tools do all the work and absorb the forces of hollowing.  I am more of a teacher not an entertainer.  My demos are fun to watch but they are designed to be instructional.  You can see my work in the Gallery, see above menu.

My demo will walk through turning from the tree to the finish, concentrating on tool control, chucking issues, support problems, vibration issues, preventing catches, grain orientation, turning in stages, reverse chucking, and finishing.  I will teach techniques for both outside and inside of turning. My goal is to start sanding with 320-220 grit sandpaper on the outside of bowls and hollow forms.

My demonstrations are designed for all skill levels to benefit from these methods. This is not a sales pitch or review of any tools.

You must have the free Zoom app downloaded on your computer or mobile device to join this demonstration.
